UCLA to align with lifting of L.A. city vaccine verification ordinance

COVID-19 Response and Recovery Task Force

Note: Those who work in UCLA Health clinical areas (including medical, dental and nursing clinics) must follow theĀ COVID-19 protocols for healthcare settings. However, those who work in both clinical and non-clinical settings must also comply with these campus protocols when outside of the healthcare environment.

UCLA PreK-12 facilities (including early care and education centers, UCLA Lab School and Geffen Academy) will follow specific protocols that will be communicated separately from the schools.

Dear Bruin Community:

As Los Angeles continues to ease safety protocols, the L.A. City Ordinance has been modified (PDF) to make it optional to check for proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours for entry into restaurants and other public venues.

UCLA has adopted this change for most of its venues and events, though some exceptions apply (see below). All individuals coming to campus are still required to fill out the UCLA COVID-19 Symptom Monitoring Survey every day. The clearance certificate will indicate whether an individual, including a non-affiliated visitor, is required to mask indoors based on vaccination status.

Venue exceptions

The UCLA symptom survey clearance certificate will still be required to be shown by students, faculty, staff and visitors for entry into UCLA Recreation facilities and dining halls on the Hill.

Optional event protocols

It is now optional for departments hosting events and event organizers to conduct pre-entry checks, as long as they are done equitably across all attendees and organizers give attendees advance notice of the checks prior to the event. The pre-entry check for students, staff, faculty and non-affiliated visitors can be done by requesting to see UCLA COVID-19 Symptom Monitoring Survey clearance certificates, but not via vaccination cards/proof of negative test, in accordance with the UCLA Protocol for Organized Events (PDF).

This is the latest change to our campus protocols, which, as anticipated, are continuing to evolve this quarter. Other recent updates, which include changes to indoor masking requirements, continued weekly COVID-19 testing requirements, and organized event protocols at UCLA, were shared with the community in a recent BruinPost.

As a reminder, indoor masking is still required for those who are not up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations, which applies to everyone including non-affiliate visitors. This includes events such as concerts, open-to-the-public seminars, symposia and academic presentations hosted by departments, and when entering campus buildings and UCLA Housing facilities. Please note there are spaces where masking is still required by LACDPH for everyone regardless of vaccination status, including healthcare settings, public transit, etc. Updated COVID-19 signage is posted throughout campus to inform the UCLA community and visitors of these requirements. Mega events will continue to follow LACDPH guidance for large events.

Upgraded masks are still strongly recommended indoors for all, regardless of vaccination status, including in classrooms and when in crowded settings. As we aim to maintain protocol consistency across all of UCLA, individual campus departments, organizations and venues cannot create their own masking policies that deviate from the current campus protocols.

We encourage everyone to consider situational risks you may encounter on campus and in the larger community and make choices that you feel are best to maintain your own personal wellness, as well as that of those around you as we collectively navigate this phase of the pandemic and the in-person events of the spring.

Sincerely,
